On Thursday May 6, the Asia Society of Washington DC sponsored the screening of a movie of King Norodom Sihanouk. “My Village at Sunset” is the first film directed by Norodom Sihanouk after his return from exile in 1991. Starring Norodom Sihamoni “My Village at Sunset” tells the story of a well-educated Khmer surgeon who gives up a privileged life in France and returns to Cambodia to take care of victims of land-mine explosions in a Siem Reap hospital. Behind the difficult war background, a cute love triangle is set up between the doctor, a distant cousin in love with him and an assistant nurse who will finally be the chosen one and marry him, but not for long. Unfortunately for her, the brave doctor volunteers to accompany a mine-disposal squadron into the countryside and he is tragically killed on duty. The screening was kind of intimate, around 50 people, including current Ambassador of Cambodia in the US, former US Ambassador to the United Nations, some Cambodian folks and of course Khmer-addicted Western people.
